The company was started by Mr Walker and Mr Miller in 1942 and operated from their premises at 144 Charles St in Sheffield city centre. The vast majority of the company’s clients were locally based manufacturers working in the coal, steel and cutlery industries. The company very quickly established a reputation for providing a competent and reliable service and secured numerous maintenance contracts with local companies. Over the next 25 years things went well and Walker Miller prospered in what was a very good time for manufacturing in the UK. Around the beginning of the 1970’s manufacturing in the UK went into decline and Walker Miller found it had a diminishing client base. The company had no choice but to re think its business plan moving away from manufacturers and looking towards the growing commercial and public sectors. The next 10 years were difficult and a time of change as staff and management had to adapt to different working environments and new clients. Additional training was undertaken and the company was accredited with CHAS, Construction Line, NICEIC, and BAFE. In more recent years staff have also received training on new software including Amtech Design and certification and AutoCAD. The time and effort proved worthwhile and Walker Miller gradually expanded its new client base moving into schools, hospitals, Universities, shops, the public sector and numerous other commercial clients. In 1994 Walker Miller moved into new premises at 2 Walkley Lane and continues to trade from this address today. The financial crash of 2008 created very difficult trading conditions for everyone but the company faced this challenge with the experience gained over the last 70 years. A positive attitude and hard work helped us through 6 years of recession and the company has emerged stronger than ever. We are once again looking forward to the challenges ahead and an exciting and prosperous future.
